The Fourth of July—also known as Independence Day or July 4th—has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution. On July 2nd, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson.
From 1776 to the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence, with festivities ranging from fireworks, parades and concerts to more casual family gatherings and barbecues.
It was 12 years later in 1789 before the U. S. Constitution was ratified. The Bill of Rights attached to that document ensured certain rights to the people. It's these rights, more so than independence from England, that are more crucial to our modern day existence as a free people living in a democratic republic.
We at MLA revere these rights, freedom of speech, the press and religion guaranteed by the First Amendment, freedom from unreasonable searches and the right to privacy guaranteed by the Fourth and the right to a jury trial in civil cases guaranteed by the Seventh.
The Seventh Amendment codifies the right to a jury trial in certain civil cases, and inhibits courts from overturning a jury's findings of fact. In Illinois by Virtue of Section 13 of the Illinois Constitution we are guaranteed that "The right to trial by jury heretofore enjoyed shall remain inviolate"
Morici Figlioli will always stand to protect our clients' right to trial by jury. A right which protects every citizen from the arbitrary actions of government, and against the negligence of big corporations and others.
Dave Figlioli and I and all the attorneys and staff members at Morici Figlioli wish you and your family a healthy and happy 4th of July holiday. Please drive carefully, wear your seat belts and watch the kids around fire works. Know always that we are here when you need us.
