Another big snow day has arrived in Chicago, bringing with it freezing temperatures and as much as a foot of fresh powder.
If you happen to be stuck by the winter weather, here are a few precautionary measures to keep safe:
Get your car ready for the winter
- Take your vehicle to a mechanic to be thoroughly checked
- Always have a full tank of gas
- Keep an emergency case in your car at all times
Insulate your house for the winter
- Install storm windows or cover windows from the inside to keep the cold air out
- Inspect and clean your heating equipment and chimneys
- Use alternative heating methods (electric blankets, coal / wood-burning stoves) with adequate ventilation
- Set your temperature to at least 55 degrees Fahrenheit even if you are going away for a few days
- Keep handy tools and various supplies to secure your home (including amble food and water)
Essentials for an emergency case
- warm blanket, cotton towel, paper towels, wet naps or towelettes
- extra boots, gloves, scarves, hats, sweaters, pants and other warm clothes
- food and water (non-perishable, easy to prepare items)
- battery-powered radio, extra batteries, cell phone charger
- ice scraper, small shovel, flashlight, matches
- windshield washer fluid and extra wipers
- flares, jumper cables, a tool kit or multi-purpose tool
- tire chains, a tire gauge, a spare tire (with air in it), tire-changing equipment
- bag of sand, salt, rock or non-clumping kitty litter (anti-slip items)
- first-aid kit with all necessary components such as medications, band-aids, bandages, gauze sponges, squares, bandages, tape, space blanket, cold packs, medical exam gloves, scissors, acetaminophen (such as Tylenol), aspirin, tweezers, rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, syringes, sanitation and personal hygiene items, etc.
